2012 NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region
Kansas City, KS – One day after Messiah College women's soccer earned a pair of NSCAA All-Americans, they were honored with a foursome of Mid-Atlantic All-Region elections.
Alex Brandt,
Alicia Frey,
Elizabeth Phillips, and
Rachel Scheibeler were listed among the awardees, as Messiah finished with four All-Region honors for the second consecutive season.
Brandt, Frey, and Phillips were all named to the First Team, with Scheibeler receiving a Second Team nod.
The honor for Brandt is her third in as many years for the Falcons, as she was also named a First Team All-American earlier this week. Widely regarded as one of the best players in the nation, Brandt was
the Commonwealth Player of the Year this season as Messiah won their
sixth-straight Commonwealth Championship. She led the team this season in both goals (17) and assists (15). In just three years with the Falcons (after transferring into Messiah for her sophomore season), Brandt has ascended into the program's record books; she ranks 3rd all-time in career assists (35), 5th all-time in single-season assists (17), and 9th all-time in career points (97).
Phillips, Frey, and Scheibeler are all earning the award for the first times in their careers. Frey The 2010 Commonwealth Rookie of the Year, Frey was named All-Commonwealth for the third time in her career this season, as she finished as the Falcons' fourth-leading scorer. Arguably one of the most versatile players in the nation, Frey spent time at forward, midfield, and defensive positions for
the Falcons' national championship team this season. Specifically, Frey shifted to the defensive side of the field at the start of the Falcons' six-game NCAA Tournament run, helping Messiah allow just a single game in the NCAA postseason.
Phillips' All-Region honor is in no doubt recognition for her outstanding defensive leadership for the National Championship Falcons. Messiah placed first in the nation in goals against average (0.227) and shutout percentage (0.846) as the Falcons allowed goals in just four games—six total goals—all season. Phillips also earned First Team All-Commonwealth honors this season.
Scheibeler's Second Team honor is well-deserved, as the senior midfielder's impressive season is easy to miss among the Falcons' powerful lineup. Scheibeler was second the team in goals (16) and total points (38) in 2012, and earned the NCAA Tournament's Most Valuable Offensive Player after scoring game-winners in both the National Semifinal and Final. Scheibeler also tied her classmate
Alex Brandt for the conference lead in goals and assists this season as she earned Honorable Mention All-Commonwealth.
