The Messiah women's track team is in the middle of their indoor season and are looking to put forth a good showing at MAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-25 in Bethlehem, Pa. Senior
Marie Johnson competes in the high jump and long jump and is having a good season thus far. At the Coach I Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall she finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.52 meters, and also placed third at the Orange and Maroon Classic on Jan. 21 with a mark of 1.57 meters.
Â
We decided to sit down with Marie and learn more about her #WhyMessiah experience.
Â
What are the names of the rest of your family and where do you fall among siblings?
My parents are Walter Irvin and Felicia Johnson. I two older brothers named Joel and Matthew, and then a younger sister named Krystal.
Â
Why did you come to Messiah and/or why do you love being at Messiah?
I felt really welcomed by the track coach and I love the community here at Messiah.
Â
If you could have dinner with one person in history, who would it be and why?
Adam, he was the first Human and he probably had a wealth of knowledge.
Â
How do you balance your academic work and your commitment to your sport?
It is tough at times balancing a busy schedule with academics and my sport but being busy actually helps me to stay organized and have good time management.
Â
Who has most influenced your life and why?
My Mother because she gave birth to me and is always encouraging me.
Â
What is one thing about Coach Fogelsanger that those outside your team may not know?
He really takes the time to listen to an athlete's input, which I know we all greatly appreciate.
Â
What is special about your coaching staff and teammates, and how would you explain that to a recruit or someone outside of the program?
Everyone on the team is very encouraging; we push each other, and are eager to help each other in times of need.
Â
What is one of your favorite team traditions and why?
I enjoy eating out for dinner at meets. There is just something about sitting down with other stinky athletes that creates a special bond!
Â
Who is the funniest person on your team and why?
Me! I think I am hilarious, although I don't know if the others would agree, I really just annoy everyone and have fun with it. Lizzy Cole is pretty funny as well!
Â
What is the toughest part of being a collegiate student-athlete?
It gets touch when people plan things during practice time, I don't like missing practice and so generally I end up stretching and icing at meetings that interfere with practice time.
Â
Have you experienced an obstacle that you've had to overcome and would be willing to share?
Jumping is very challenging mentally but I am working through it. I take time to pray a lot and remember to just enjoy the sport.
If you had to answer the question #WhyMessiah what would you say?
At Messiah there is a community unlike any other and it is so welcoming.
