Complete MAC Scholar-Athletes for Fall 2014

Annville, PA - The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) released on Monday the recipients of the 2014 Fall Scholar-Athlete awards, with Messiah field hockey defender Becky Ely listed among the award winners.

The Scholar-Athlete award is given to a senior in each men's and women's sport of each sport season. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.20 (4.0 scale). Historically, recipients hold GPA's north of 3.50 and are regarded as academic leaders in their respective sport.

The MAC Awards Committee bases selection of recipients on an even balance (50-50) of both academic and athletic prowess.

In her four season with Messiah, Ely grew into one of the top defenders in the South Atlantic Region and, this season, picked up her second-straight NFHCA All-Region honor. She was also named All-Commonwealth for the third-straight season and is a former conference Rookie of the Year (2011).

This season, Ely was the primary leader of a Falcons defense that held opponents to 1.45 goals per game on just 9.7 shots per game. Ely helped Messiah win their eighth-straight Commonwealth Championship and advance to their 14th-straight NCAA Championships Tournament.

In the classroom Ely is a mathematics major with a teaching certification. She holds a 3.77 cumulative grade point average and this season picked up her second Field Hockey Academic All-MAC honor in as many seasons.
