Messiah Men's Soccer All-Time All-Commonwealth HonorsAnnville, PA – The Commonwealth Conference released the 2014 men's soccer conference awards on Tuesday, with Messiah College honored with nine recognitions.
Jeremy Payne and
Carter Robbins were named Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, to lead the group.
Both Payne and Robbins were also named First Team All-Commonwealth. Joining them on First Team was forward
Jack Thompson, midfielder
Danny Brandt, midfielder
Brian Ramirez, and defender
Bryant Myer. Forward
Mike Kovach, defender
Matt Kyne, and keeper
Brandon West took home Second Team honors.
Payne and Robbins took home their respective Player of the Year honors for the second-straight season. Payne led the Commonwealth with 21 points across eight games, scoring a league-best nine goals. His total points (43) and goals (18) were also tops among all conference players.
Centerback Robbins, meanwhile, led the Messiah defensive to a conference-best two goals allowed and a 0.25 GAA in eight games.
Jack Thompson tallied eight points in just six conference games, and he's second on the team with 24 points. His 10 assists are also the most on the team.
Danny Brandt is fourth on the team in total points (18), six of which came on three goals in conference play. In just his second season with the Falcons he's become a dynamic midfielder who can beat teams with his ability to score and his deft passing.
Like Payne, Robbins, and Thompson,
Brian Ramirez's First Team honor is his third in as many years. He has two goals and six assists this season, and his steady play on both sides of the ball has enabled Messiah to control territory for large stretches of each game they play.
Mike Kovach's Second Team honor is the same as that of 2012, though he was also Honorable Mention in 2013. This season, Kovach was second in the conference with 14 points (4g, 6a).
The All-Commonwealth honors for
Bryant Myer and
Matt Kyne are the first of their respective careers. Along with Robbins, both Myer and Kyne have played as elite defenders, enabling Messiah to collect a No. 3-ranked and conference-best 0.33 GAA.
Keeper
Brandon West is also a big reason for the Falcons' defensive prowess. He led the conference with a .301 GAA while carrying a 0.850 save percentage across all games this season.
Messiah (17-0-1) is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation and will enter the Commonwealth Tournament this Thursday when they play host to either No. 4 Alvernia or No. 5 Lebanon Valley. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
