Seven Falcons Honored on All-Commonwealth Teams

11/1/2012 12:41:00 PM

Annville, PA – The Commonwealth Conference announced the 2012 field hockey all-conference teams Thursday, highlighting seven Messiah student-athletes for their performances on the field. The release comes a day ahead of the Falcons' semifinals matchup against Arcadia University. (For a Commonwealth Conference Preview, click here!)

Five players—Molly Gebrosky, Becky Ely, Gina Kellett, Natalie Ziegler, and Juliana Hershey — received First Team honors, while seniors Kelly Martin and Emily Hursh landed a spot on the Second Team. The All-Commonwealth teams are selected based on votes received from the coaches of the conference.

Gebrosky, the Falcons' goalkeeper, earns her first all-conference selection after leading the league in goals against average at 0.76, allowing just three goals on 21 shots.  The junior finished the season with an impressive .857 save percentage.

Sophomore Becky Ely was again honored with a first-team selection, coming off her freshman season's Rookie of the Year honors. Ely helped lead a defensive unit that allowed just three goals in eight conference games. Ely added two goals to her list of accomplishments this season, one each in games against Stevenson and Alvernia.

Fellow defender Gina Kellett earns her third consecutive First Team selection following Commonwealth Rookie of the Year honors in 2010 and First Team honors a season ago. Kellett, a starter in all 18 contests for the Falcons, was another crucial piece to the dominant Falcons' defense.

Ziegler garners a First Team selection for the second consecutive season. The Myerstown, Pa., native utilized a balance of defensive and offensive skills to impress often during conference play.  Ziegler's three goals and two assists compliment the defensive prowess she plays with game in and game out.

Hershey, a First Team All-American player from a year ago, earns a spot on the First Team All-Commonwealth team again, her second such honor. Hershey led the Falcons' balanced attacking unit this season with eight goals and seven assists on the season.

Seniors Kelly Martin and Emily Hursh garnered Second Team honors for the Falcons. Martin, a First Team member from last season, contributed a team-high eight assists, complimenting her four goals. Hursh makes her first appearance on the All-Commonwealth teams after a six-goal, seven-assist performance for the Falcons this season.

Commonwealth Player of the Year honors went to Nadine Yunginger from Elizabethtown. Arcadia University took home the Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year honors. Freshman Jennie Kamel was second in the conference in scoring for the Knights, proving crucial to coach Erin Livingston's fourth-seeded playoff spot and a 5-3 conference record.

Below is a look at the entire All-Commonwealth selections.

Note: With the addition of Hood College and Stevenson University in 2012-13, the Commonwealth Conference has added an Honorable Mention team to the All-Conference awards. These are players who received more than one vote for a First or Second Team honor, but were not selected to either of those teams.
